Western Taurus Mountains

Best Conditions for Organic Farming

Surrounded by the green slopes of the western Taurus Mountains, our olive groves and avocado trees grow above the tranquil village of Karaöz along the path to our farm. Thanks to the south-easterly slope and the crystal-clear still water of the surrounding mountains, fruits and spices thrive excellently here. Do the breathtaking views help the avocados to grow? We can’t say for sure, but what we do know is that it’s not just the people living here who benefit from the pristine nature around them, but also the quality of the harvest from the fields.

Farming for over 2000 years
The Western Taurus Mountains are a haven for biodiversity. Towering cedar, pine, and juniper forests blanket the slopes, providing shelter to a variety of wildlife. Among the dense foliage, you might spot the elusive Anatolian leopard, wild goats deftly scaling cliffs, or a red fox darting through the underbrush. Birdwatchers will be delighted by sightings of raptors, colorful European rollers, and the majestic golden eagle. In spring, wildflowers like orchids and crocuses transform the meadows into vibrant tapestries, while aromatic herbs like thyme and oregano fill the air with their scents.
A Geological Masterpiece
The Western Taurus Mountains emerged over millions of years through the collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. This powerful force pushed ancient seabeds upward, creating the rugged limestone peaks and deep gorges that define the region today. Rich in karst formations, underground rivers, and hidden caves, this region offers an exceptional geological wonderland. Visitors can marvel at the dramatic cliffs, explore labyrinthine caves like Altınbeşik, or trek through valleys carved by millennia of natural forces.
A Journey Through the Ages
These mountains have been a crossroads of civilizations for millennia. From the ancient Lycians and Romans to the Byzantines and Ottomans, countless cultures have left their mark here. Ancient ruins, such as the amphitheaters of Termessos, the rock tombs of Myra, and the well-preserved city of Arycanda, offer glimpses into a rich past. The Taurus Mountains were not just a backdrop but a vital part of these cultures’ stories, providing resources, protection, and inspiration. Imagine standing where Alexander the Great once walked, marveling at engineering feats like aqueducts, or following pathways used by ancient traders and pilgrims.

The region’s diverse climate, with cool air and abundant rainfall, supports organic farming by promoting healthy soil, natural irrigation, and reducing reliance on artificial inputs.

The Taurus Mountains in Turkey are rich in freshwater from its plenty springs and rivers. The water quality is ideal for organic farming due to its purity, mineral content, and low pollution levels.

The region’s exceptional biodiversity, with diverse plant and animal species, enhances organic farming by supporting natural pest control, pollination, and soil health, reducing the need for synthetic chemicals.

The region’s fertile soil, abundant in nutrients and organic matter, enhances organic farming by supporting healthy crop growth, retaining moisture, and minimizing the need for synthetic fertilizers.
